About the Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese Water Dog was bred along Portugal's coast to dive for gear, herd fish into nets, and carry messages between boats, and that working past explains his tireless energy, keen intelligence, and love of the water. Highly trainable and eager to partner with people, the PWD excels at obedience, agility, and dock diving, but he needs a genuine daily outlet or that busy mind will invent its own mischief. His curly, low-shedding coat is often described as a plus for allergy-conscious homes, yet it demands frequent brushing and regular clipping to prevent matting. Affectionate, playful, and sometimes mouthy as a youngster, he thrives with an active owner who wants a true companion.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.
