About the Puli

The Puli is a compact Hungarian herding dog instantly recognized by its long, naturally corded coat that forms dense dreadlock-like cords covering the entire body. Behind the mop-like exterior is an agile, athletic, and remarkably intelligent working dog historically used to drive and herd sheep on the Hungarian plains. Energetic, quick, and springy in movement, the Puli is devoted, lively, and protective, with a strong watchdog instinct and a spirited personality. Its cords require specialized care rather than brushing. The Puli thrives with active owners who provide training, exercise, and companionship, and it excels in herding, obedience, and agility despite its unusual appearance.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Highly intelligent and athletic, excelling in dog sports
  • Low-shedding corded coat and long lifespan
  • Devoted, alert family watchdog

Things to consider

  • Corded coat needs specialized care and slow drying
  • Independent and can be stubborn; needs consistent training
  • Vocal and protective, prone to barking at novelty

History

The Puli is an ancient breed brought to Hungary over a thousand years ago by the migrating Magyars, who used it as a nimble sheep-herding dog. It often worked alongside the larger Komondor, with the smaller, darker Puli driving and gathering flocks. Nearly lost after the World Wars, it was preserved by dedicated breeders and is recognized by the FCI and the AKC Herding Group.

Temperament

Smart, energetic, and devoted, the Puli is an alert watchdog that bonds closely with its family and can be reserved with strangers. It is quick to learn but has an independent, self-directed streak from its herding heritage. It needs consistent training, socialization, and plenty of activity to channel its considerable drive.
