About the Pumi
The Pumi is a lively, medium-small Hungarian herding dog known for its whimsical face, expressive semi-erect ears, and curly, corkscrew coat. Bred as an all-purpose farm and stock dog, it is a bold, energetic, and extremely intelligent worker that moves and herds with quick, agile intensity. The Pumi is alert and vocal, quick to announce visitors, and forms strong bonds with its family. Its lively mind and boundless drive make it a standout in agility, obedience, and herding trials, but also mean it needs abundant exercise and mental stimulation. The waterproof curly coat is relatively low-shedding but requires regular trimming and combing to maintain its distinctive texture.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

The Pumi emerged in Hungary from the 17th to 18th centuries, developed from the Puli crossed with imported German and French herding dogs, resulting in a more terrier-like, versatile stock dog. It was used to drive cattle, sheep, and pigs and to control vermin on farms. The breed is recognized by the FCI and joined the AKC Herding Group in 2016.
