About the Pyrenean Shepherd
The Pyrenean Shepherd (Berger des Pyrenees) is a small, wiry, intensely energetic herding dog from the French Pyrenees, traditionally paired with the Great Pyrenees to move and manage sheep while the larger dog guarded them. Lightweight and astonishingly quick, it is regarded as one of the most animated and hardworking of all herding breeds. It comes in two coat varieties, rough-faced and smooth-faced, and bonds fiercely to its person. Sharp, sensitive, and wary of strangers, the Pyrenean Shepherd is a demanding but rewarding companion for active owners, excelling in agility, herding, and obedience when given the mental and physical work it craves.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Pyrenean Shepherd is an ancient herding dog of the French Pyrenees, working stock alongside shepherds for centuries in the same mountains as the guardian Great Pyrenees. It gained wider recognition after distinguished service as a messenger and search dog in World War I. The breed is recognized by the FCI and joined the AKC Herding Group in 2009.
Temperament
Energetic, alert, and deeply devoted to its owner, the Pyrenean Shepherd is a lively, sensitive dog with strong herding instincts. It can be wary or reactive with strangers and other animals without early, thorough socialization. Its intelligence and drive demand consistent, positive training and abundant activity to prevent boredom.
