About the Rat Terrier

The Rat Terrier is an American farm dog developed as an all-purpose ratter, hunter, and companion, prized for its intelligence, tenacity, and versatility. Coming in miniature and standard sizes, it is compact, muscular, and quick, with a smooth coat in many color patterns. Bred to clear vermin from farms and to hunt small game, it retains a strong prey drive, keen alertness, and a lively, affectionate personality. Sociable and devoted, the Rat Terrier bonds closely with its family and is generally good with children, making it a sturdy, adaptable companion. Smart and energetic, it enjoys training, games, and dog sports, and needs regular activity to stay happy.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Once among the most common farm dogs in the United States, it was reportedly named by President Theodore Roosevelt. The breed joined the AKC Terrier Group in 2013.
