About the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog

The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog (Ciobanesc Romanesc Mioritic) is a large, shaggy livestock guardian from the Carpathian Mountains, bred to protect flocks from wolves and bears. Covered in a long, dense, weatherproof coat that is usually white or pale, it is a powerful yet calm dog that guards through vigilance, imposing presence, and a deep bark. Devoted and gentle with its family and stock, the Mioritic is deeply loyal but naturally suspicious of strangers and strongly territorial. Independent and self-directed by design, it needs experienced owners, secure space, thorough socialization, and consistent leadership, along with regular grooming to keep its heavy coat in good condition.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Mioritic developed among shepherds of the Romanian Carpathians, where it guarded transhumant flocks alongside other native guardians. Its name evokes the classic Romanian pastoral ballad Miorita, reflecting the breed's deep ties to shepherding culture. It is recognized by the FCI and enrolled in the AKC Foundation Stock Service, and remains rare outside Romania.

Temperament

Calm, devoted, and protective, the Mioritic is affectionate and gentle with its family while remaining wary and defensive toward strangers and threats. It is independent and territorial, guarding on its own judgment, and can be dominant without firm guidance. Early, extensive socialization and consistent leadership are essential.
