About the Russian-European Laika
The Russian-European Laika is a black-and-white spitz-type hunting dog from the forests of northern Russia, bred to bay up and tree game while barking to signal the hunter. Compact, hardy, and weatherproof, it has a wedge-shaped head, pricked ears, and a tightly curled tail carried over the back. Standardized in the mid-20th century from several regional laika lines, it is a tireless, independent worker with a keen nose and strong prey drive. Loyal and territorial with its own people, it can be reserved with strangers and assertive with other dogs. This is a demanding working breed that needs a serious outlet, space, and an owner who respects its hunting heritage.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Russian-European Laika was consolidated in the 1940s-1950s at Soviet state kennels, blending laika populations from the Komi, Arkhangelsk, and Karelia regions into a single standardized hunting spitz. It descends from ancient northern forest dogs used to hunt squirrel, marten, and larger game such as boar and elk. The breed is recognized by the FCI within its spitz and primitive types.
Temperament
Russian-European Laikas are energetic, alert, and devoted to their handlers, with a strong independent streak inherited from generations of self-directed hunting. They are naturally vocal in the field and make keen watchdogs, but they can be aloof toward strangers and combative with strange dogs. They need firm, respectful leadership and abundant activity.
Questions to ask a Russian-European Laika breeder
- Are the parents proven working hunting dogs, and what game do they work?
- Have the parents been screened for hip dysplasia?
- How is the litter socialized to people and other animals given the breed's aloofness?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. As with many medium working spitz, hip screening of breeding stock is prudent.
Overall hardiness. The breed is generally healthy, but limited gene pools mean choosing breeders who track lineage carefully matters.
Working injuries. Active hunting dogs are prone to cuts, ticks, and musculoskeletal strains that need routine field care.
