About the Russian Spaniel
The Russian Spaniel is a compact, hardy gundog developed in the Soviet Union for flushing and retrieving game in varied Russian terrain and climate. Longer-bodied and shorter-legged than English spaniels, it is an energetic, versatile hunter with a good nose, strong retrieving drive, and enthusiasm for water. Cheerful, affectionate, and eager to please, the Russian Spaniel bonds closely with its family and makes a friendly, adaptable companion as well as a capable field dog. It is generally good with children and other pets, biddable in training, and thrives with active owners who can provide daily exercise, engagement, and the chance to use its natural hunting instincts.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

The Russian Spaniel was created in the mid-20th century, largely after World War II, by crossing English Cocker and Springer Spaniels with other spaniel types to produce a smaller, sturdier hunting dog suited to Russian conditions. It became widely used by Russian hunters and remains popular there. The breed is not yet recognized by the FCI or AKC but has an established national standard.
