About the Saarloos Wolfdog

The Saarloos Wolfdog is a wolf-like breed created in the Netherlands by crossing a German Shepherd with a Eurasian wolf, producing a dog with pronounced lupine looks and reserved, primal instincts. Large, athletic, and pack-oriented, it carries a dense wolf-grey, brown, or white coat and a proud, high-legged gait. Rather than the sharp guarding drive of a shepherd, it tends toward caution and flight, being deeply loyal to its family yet wary and shy with strangers. It bonds intensely and dislikes being alone, needing companionship, patient socialization, and space to move. This is a specialist breed, not a beginner's dog, and requires committed, experienced ownership.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Striking wolf-like appearance with a strong, athletic build
  • Deeply loyal and bonded to its family or pack
  • Quiet in the home, rarely a nuisance barker

Things to consider

  • Shy, flight-prone temperament demands extensive socialization
  • Independent and not easily obedience-trained; needs experienced owners
  • Strong need for companionship and space; prone to distress if isolated

History

The Saarloos Wolfdog was developed in the 1930s by Dutch breeder Leendert Saarloos, who crossed a German Shepherd Dog with a female European wolf to create a more naturally robust working dog. The experiment produced a shy, wolf-like animal unsuited to guide work, but it was preserved as a distinct breed. The Dutch Kennel Club recognized it in 1975, naming it in Saarloos's honor, and the FCI followed.

Temperament

Saarloos Wolfdogs are intelligent, reserved, and strongly attached to their family group, showing wolf-like caution rather than aggression. They are typically shy or aloof with strangers and may retreat from unfamiliar situations, making early, thorough socialization essential. They are gentle within their pack but independent and not naturally obedient.

Questions to ask a Saarloos Wolfdog breeder

  • How are puppies socialized during the critical early weeks to counter innate shyness?
  • Have the parents been screened for hip and elbow dysplasia?

Health considerations to discuss

Hip and elbow dysplasia. Large working breed; radiographic screening of breeding stock is recommended.

Degenerative myelopathy. A progressive spinal cord disease occurs in the breed; DNA testing can identify carriers.

Pituitary dwarfism. Inherited from the German Shepherd base; DNA testing is available and advised.
