About the Saluki

The Saluki is one of the oldest and most elegant sighthounds, bred by desert peoples across the Middle East to course gazelle and hare over open ground. Slender, aerodynamic, and deceptively delicate in appearance, it combines blistering speed with astonishing endurance. It comes in a smooth variety and a feathered variety with silky fringing on the ears, tail, and legs, in a wide range of colors. Reserved and dignified, the Saluki is deeply devoted to its own family yet aloof with strangers and independent by nature. It is quiet indoors but requires safe, large spaces to run, and its powerful prey drive makes secure fencing and leashed walks essential.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Graceful, athletic build with extraordinary speed and stamina
  • Quiet, clean, and calm in the home
  • Gentle and deeply devoted to its family

Things to consider

  • Extreme prey drive; must be leashed or in securely fenced areas
  • Independent and sensitive; not motivated by conventional obedience drills
  • Thin skin and lean build make it sensitive to cold and rough handling

History

The Saluki has ancient roots across the Fertile Crescent, with hound-like dogs of similar type depicted in Egyptian and Mesopotamian art thousands of years ago. Nomadic Bedouin tribes prized these hounds for coursing game and regarded them as noble companions rather than mere property. Western breeding was established in the early 20th century, and the AKC recognized the Saluki in 1929.

Temperament

Salukis are gentle, sensitive, and reserved, forming intense bonds with their families while remaining aloof toward strangers. They are calm and undemanding in the house but transform into swift, focused coursers outdoors, with an overwhelming urge to chase moving quarry. Independent and soft in temperament, they respond poorly to harsh methods and best to patient, gentle handling.

Questions to ask a Saluki breeder

  • Have the parents been screened for cardiac disease and had eyes examined?
  • Is there any family history of hemangiosarcoma or other cancers?
  • How are the puppies socialized to counter the breed's natural reserve?

Health considerations to discuss

Cardiac disease. Heart conditions occur in the breed; cardiac evaluation of breeding stock is recommended.

Anesthesia sensitivity. Low body fat and sighthound metabolism mean anesthesia protocols must be adjusted.

Cancer. Hemangiosarcoma and other cancers are reported; awareness and regular veterinary checks help early detection.
