About the Schnoodle
The Schnoodle is a designer crossbreed pairing a Schnauzer, most often the Miniature, with a Poodle, usually Toy or Miniature size. Because it is a hybrid and not a standardized breed, no two Schnoodles are guaranteed to look or behave alike; size, coat texture, and temperament are estimated from the parents rather than fixed. Many are bred hoping for a low-shedding, wavy-to-curly coat, but a hypoallergenic or non-shedding result is never guaranteed in any Poodle cross. Expect a bright, people-focused companion that usually enjoys training, thrives on company, and needs regular brushing and professional grooming.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines
- Often lower-shedding with a lighter odor when the Poodle coat dominates, though this is never guaranteed
- Typically eager to please and quick to learn, reflecting the intelligence of both parent breeds
- Affectionate, alert, and adaptable to apartments or houses when exercise and company are provided
Things to consider
- As a hybrid, size, coat type, and temperament vary widely by generation and parentage and cannot be guaranteed
- Curly and wavy coats usually need brushing several times a week plus professional grooming every six to eight weeks
- Can be vocal and prone to separation-related behavior if left alone for long stretches without training
History
The Schnoodle emerged as part of the designer-dog trend that gained momentum in North America in the 1980s and 1990s, as breeders paired Schnauzers with Poodles hoping to combine trainability with a lower-shedding coat. It has never been recognized as a standardized breed by major kennel clubs. Litters range from tiny Toy crosses to larger Standard combinations depending on the parents chosen.
Temperament
Schnoodles are typically bright, affectionate, and eager to please, often bonding strongly with their families. Many are alert and playful and can be vocal, so early training and socialization help. Individual temperament varies with parentage and generation.
Questions to ask a Schnoodle breeder
- Can you show OFA or DNA health clearances for BOTH the Schnauzer and the Poodle parent, including eye and patella results?
- Is this litter an F1 first-generation, F1b backcross, or multigenerational cross, and how does that affect coat and shedding?
- What size is each parent, since Toy, Miniature, or Standard Poodles produce very different adult sizes?
Health considerations to discuss
Progressive retinal atrophy. Educational, non-diagnostic. Both parent breeds carry inherited PRA; ask for prcd-PRA DNA testing on the Poodle side and a current ophthalmologist eye exam on the Schnauzer side.
Patellar luxation. Educational, non-diagnostic. Common in smaller parent lines; responsible breeders provide an OFA patella evaluation on both parents.
Hip dysplasia. Educational, non-diagnostic. Ask for OFA or PennHIP hip screening on both parents, especially where Standard Poodle or larger Schnauzer lines are used.
