About the Sealyham Terrier
The Sealyham Terrier is a sturdy, short-legged terrier from Wales, bred to work badger, otter, and fox with grit far exceeding its modest size. Predominantly white with a weather-resistant double coat, it has a long, powerful head, folded ears, and a distinctive full beard and heavy brows. Once fashionable and now quite rare, the Sealyham is calmer and more laid-back than many terriers, combining boldness with a notably good sense of humor. Devoted and affectionate with family, it can be reserved with strangers and stubborn when it chooses. It needs moderate exercise and regular coat care, making a characterful, adaptable companion for those who value a rare, spirited breed.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Sealyham Terrier was developed in the mid-to-late 19th century by Captain John Edwardes at his Sealyham estate in Pembrokeshire, Wales, who crossed various terriers to create a tough white working dog. It became fashionable in the early 20th century among the aristocracy and film stars. The AKC recognized it in 1911, though the breed is now considered vulnerable due to low numbers.
Temperament
Sealyham Terriers are more relaxed and even-tempered than many terriers, combining terrier boldness with an affectionate, playful, and sometimes comical nature. They are devoted to their families and adaptable, though they can be wary of strangers and stubborn. Alert and confident, they make good watchdogs and calm companions with proper socialization.
Questions to ask a Sealyham Terrier breeder
- Have the parents had eyes examined for lens luxation and retinal disease?
- Is there any history of deafness, and are white pups checked?
- What is the breeding program doing to maintain health in a small gene pool?
Health considerations to discuss
Lens luxation. Primary lens luxation occurs in terriers; DNA testing and eye exams are advised.
Eye disorders. Retinal dysplasia and other eye conditions occur; regular ophthalmic checks help.
Deafness. Congenital deafness can occur; BAER testing of pups is worthwhile in this mostly-white breed.
