About the Segugio Italiano
The Segugio Italiano is an ancient Italian scenthound bred to hunt hare over the varied terrain of the Italian countryside, combining a superb nose with speed, agility, and stamina. Lean and square in build, it comes in short-haired and wire-haired varieties, in solid fawn or black-and-tan. Unlike heavier pack hounds, it is athletic and light on its feet, trailing and driving game with a resonant voice before returning to its hunter. At home it is gentle, affectionate, and calm, forming close bonds with its family, though its hunting drive and endurance demand ample exercise. Even-tempered and generally sociable, it suits active owners who can provide daily physical and scenting outlets.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

The Segugio Italiano descends from ancient hounds of the Mediterranean, with a lineage often traced to dogs of Egyptian and Roman antiquity used for coursing and trailing hare. Long a favorite of Italian hunters, it was refined over centuries for both scenting and speed. It is recognized by the FCI, and the AKC has recorded it in its Hound group in recent years.

In the field they are driven, focused, and tireless, with a strong instinct to trail and give tongue. Generally docile and sociable, they need patient, positive training and abundant exercise to stay content.
Questions to ask a Segugio Italiano breeder

Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Screening of breeding stock reduces orthopedic problems in active hounds.
Ear infections. Drop ears benefit from regular cleaning, especially after field work.
