About the Segugio Maremmano

The Segugio Maremmano is a rugged Italian scenthound from the Maremma region of Tuscany, bred above all to hunt wild boar over harsh, thorny terrain. More compact and heavily built than the Segugio Italiano, it is prized for courage, adaptability, and a strong, driving voice on the trail. Its short or rough coat comes in fawn, brindle, and black-and-tan, suited to the scrubland it works. Hardy, determined, and intelligent, it hunts with real grit and endurance, whether trailing or holding boar at bay. At home it is affectionate and steady with its family, but its powerful drive and stamina make it a working dog first, best suited to active rural owners who can give it a genuine job.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Segugio Maremmano developed among the hunters of the Maremma in central Italy, where versatile boar-hunting hounds were valued over show type. Long bred purely for function, it was only officially recognized by Italy's ENCI relatively recently, in 2009, formalizing a landrace that had worked the region for generations. It is bred primarily by working hunters.
