About the Serbian Tricolour Hound

The Serbian Tricolour Hound is a Balkan scenthound closely related to the Serbian Hound, distinguished by its striking black, tan, and white tricolour coat. Medium-sized and solidly built, it was bred to hunt hare, fox, and boar over the hills and woodlands of the region, working with drive, endurance, and a resonant baying voice. Hardy and persistent on a trail, it typically hunts in packs or small groups and returns readily to its hunter. Calm, gentle, and affectionate at home, it forms strong family bonds while retaining a keen prey drive and need for vigorous exercise. Even-tempered and low-maintenance in coat, it suits active rural owners who can give it real scenting work.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Serbian Tricolour Hound shares its origins with the Serbian Hound as part of the old Balkan scenthound family, and it was long considered a colour variety before being recognized as a separate breed. It was standardized in the mid-20th century, with the FCI granting it distinct recognition in 1961. It remains chiefly a working hunter's dog in the Balkans.

Temperament

Serbian Tricolour Hounds are energetic and driven when hunting, with strong trailing instincts and a loud voice. At home they are calm, gentle, and affectionate, bonding closely with their families and generally sociable with other dogs. Independent by nature, they need patient training, exercise, and secure containment.

Hip dysplasia. Hip screening of breeding stock helps reduce orthopedic issues in active hounds.

Field injuries. Working hounds are prone to cuts, ticks, and pad damage in rough terrain.
