About the Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu has held one job for a thousand years: companion. Bred for Chinese imperial courts to warm laps and charm royalty, it approaches modern family life with the same brief - be pleasant, be present, be adored. Shih Tzus are sturdy for a toy breed, typically excellent with respectful children, and famously agreeable with other pets. Exercise needs are modest; coat needs are not, and most pet homes settle happily into a short teddy trim. The flat face brings mild heat sensitivity worth respecting on summer days.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Search all puppies →Where this breed shines
- Purpose-bred companion temperament
- Very low-shedding coat
- Sturdier with children than most toy breeds
Things to consider
- Daily face care and regular grooming are permanent duties
- Flat face means real heat caution
- House-training can take longer than average
History
Developed in the Chinese imperial court, likely from Lhasa Apso and Pekingese stock gifted from Tibet, the breed nearly vanished after 1949; essentially all modern Shih Tzus descend from fourteen dogs saved abroad.
Temperament
Merry, affectionate, and unhurried; bred to please rather than to work, and it shows in the breed's easy, companionable default.
Questions to ask a Shih Tzu breeder
- Have the parents had eye and patella examinations?
- How open are the nostrils on both parents - can I hear them breathe at rest?
- What is your guidance for tear-stain and face care?
Health considerations to discuss
Brachycephalic airway issues. Choose lines with open nostrils and quiet resting breathing.
Eye injuries and dry eye. Prominent eyes need daily attention and prompt vet care for squinting.
Patellar luxation. Standard toy-breed knee check - ask for evaluations.
