About the Shiloh Shepherd
The Shiloh Shepherd is a large American breed developed from the German Shepherd Dog to be bigger, calmer, and sounder in temperament and structure, with a strong emphasis on family suitability. Powerful and substantial, it carries a plush double coat in either smooth or long varieties and a range of colors, with an intelligent, expressive face. Bred as a gentle giant, it is known for a steady, mellow disposition, loyalty, and eagerness to please, making it responsive to training. Devoted and protective without excess sharpness, it bonds closely with its family and does well with children. It needs space, moderate daily exercise, and companionship, suiting owners who want a large, even-tempered family guardian.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Shiloh Shepherd was created in the United States beginning in the 1970s and 1980s by breeder Tina Barber, who sought to preserve the larger size, sound hips, and gentle temperament she valued in older German Shepherd lines. Selective breeding, sometimes incorporating other large breeds, produced a distinct type registered through the International Shiloh Shepherd Registry. It is not recognized by the AKC or FCI, remaining a rare developing breed.
Temperament
Shiloh Shepherds are calm, intelligent, and affectionate, bred specifically for a stable, gentle temperament. They are loyal and protective of their families yet friendly and patient, generally excelling with children and other pets. Eager to please and responsive to training, they thrive on companionship and involvement in family life.
Questions to ask a Shiloh Shepherd breeder
- Are the parents registered and health-tested through the Shiloh Shepherd registry?
- Have hips, elbows, and hearts been screened, and is there DM DNA testing?
- What is being done to maintain genetic diversity in the line?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip and elbow dysplasia. A founding goal of the breed was sounder hips; still, screening of breeding stock is essential.
Degenerative myelopathy. Inherited from German Shepherd ancestry; DNA testing can identify carriers.
Bloat (gastric torsion). This large, deep-chested breed is at risk; owners should know the emergency signs.
