About the Silken Windhound

The Silken Windhound is a graceful American sighthound, essentially a small, silky-coated coursing dog developed from Borzoi and Whippet-type lines. Elegant and athletic, it has a long, flowing coat in nearly any color, a slender build, and the smooth, floating gallop of a running hound. Bred to be a versatile companion and performance dog, it excels at lure coursing, agility, and obedience while remaining notably friendly and biddable for a sighthound. Affectionate and gentle, it bonds closely with its family and generally gets along well with children, dogs, and even other pets. It needs regular chances to run in safe areas and moderate coat care, suiting active homes wanting a sweet, sporty hound.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Silken Windhound was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s by breeder Francie Stull, who combined Borzoi and small sighthound lines to create an elegant, medium-sized coursing companion. The breed was established with careful attention to health and temperament and is recognized by the United Kennel Club. It remains a relatively young but growing breed.
