About the Silky Terrier

The Silky Terrier is a small, refined toy terrier from Australia, developed by crossing Yorkshire Terriers with Australian Terriers to create a spirited companion with a glamorous, silky blue-and-tan coat. Slightly larger and racier than the Yorkie, it retains true terrier fire beneath its elegant looks, being bold, curious, and lively. The flat, glossy coat parts down the back and hangs without touching the ground, requiring regular brushing to stay tangle-free. Alert and confident, the Silky makes a keen watchdog and an energetic, affectionate family dog. It bonds closely with its people and enjoys being involved in everything, needing daily exercise and mental engagement to channel its busy, inquisitive terrier temperament.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Silky Terrier was developed in Australia around the late 19th and early 20th centuries by crossing Yorkshire Terriers with Australian Terriers to produce a small companion with a fine silky coat. Breed standards were unified in the 1920s and 1930s, and the dog was long known as the Sydney Silky. The AKC recognized it as the Silky Terrier in 1959, placing it in the Toy group.

Temperament

Silky Terriers are lively, curious, and confident, combining a glamorous appearance with a genuine terrier temperament. They are affectionate and devoted to their families, alert as watchdogs, and full of energy and self-assurance. Intelligent but sometimes stubborn, they enjoy activity and mental challenges and can be feisty with other animals given their prey drive.

Health considerations to discuss

Luxating patella. Slipping kneecaps are common in toy breeds; an orthopedic check is advised.

Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. This hip condition affects small breeds; watch for hind-limb lameness in young dogs.

Dental disease. Small mouths are prone to crowding and tartar; regular dental care is important.
