About the Sloughi

The Sloughi is a refined North African sighthound, sometimes called the Arabian Greyhound, bred by desert and mountain peoples of the Maghreb to course hare, gazelle, and jackal. Lean and racy with a short, close coat in sand to fawn shades, it has a noble, melancholy expression and an air of quiet reserve. Built for speed and endurance over harsh terrain, it is a powerful runner with a strong prey drive. Deeply attached to its own family, it is aloof and undemonstrative with strangers, forming an intense but understated bond. Sensitive and dignified, it needs gentle handling, secure space to run, and an owner who appreciates the subtle, loyal nature of an ancient sighthound.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Sloughi is an ancient sighthound of North Africa, developed by the Berber and Bedouin peoples of present-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya to hunt across desert and mountain. Long treasured by nomadic tribes and kept as a prized coursing hound, it was documented by European travelers over centuries. It is recognized by the FCI, and the AKC admitted it to the Hound group in 2016.

Temperament

Sloughis are gentle, sensitive, and reserved, deeply devoted to their families yet aloof and cautious with strangers. They are calm and dignified indoors but keenly driven to chase moving game. Soft in temperament, they do not tolerate harsh handling and bond intensely with their own people, needing patient, understanding owners.

Health considerations to discuss

Progressive retinal atrophy. A hereditary eye disease occurs in the breed; DNA testing is available and advised.

Anesthesia sensitivity. Low body fat means sighthound anesthesia protocols are needed.

Sensitivity to cold. The thin coat and lean build make the breed prone to chilling in cold climates.
