About the Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer
The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer, or Slovensky Hrubosrsty Stavac, is a versatile hunting dog from Slovakia bred to point, track, and retrieve on land and in water. Substantial and rugged, it wears a harsh grey or silver wirehaired coat with bushy eyebrows and beard that protect it in dense cover and cold conditions. Developed in the mid-20th century from pointer and griffon-type stock, it is an all-round gundog with a keen nose, strong retrieving drive, and steady work ethic. Intelligent, biddable, and calm at home, it forms close bonds with its family and is more trainable than many independent breeds. It needs substantial daily exercise and a working outlet, suiting active hunters and outdoor households.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer was developed in Slovakia after World War II by crossing the Weimaraner, German Wirehaired Pointer, and Cesky Fousek to create a versatile grey-coated hunting dog. Bred for pointing, tracking, and water retrieving, it was standardized in the mid-20th century. It is recognized by the FCI and remains an uncommon but capable gundog.

They are devoted and affectionate with their families and steady in temperament, combining a strong work drive with a manageable off-switch at home. They need active owners who can provide substantial exercise and mental engagement.
