About the Smalandsstovare
The Smalandsstovare, or Smaland Hound, is the oldest native Swedish scenthound, a compact black-and-tan tracking dog bred to hunt hare and fox in the Smaland region. Sturdy and squarely built, it is smaller and more cobby than many European hounds, with a short, dense coat and, in some lines, a naturally short tail. Bred for stamina and a fine nose in cold northern forests, it trails and drives game with a clear, ringing voice. Calm, gentle, and affectionate at home, it is more relaxed than many working hounds while retaining a strong hunting instinct. Hardy and easy to care for in coat, it suits active owners in rural settings who can offer regular exercise and scenting work.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Smalandsstovare originated in the Smaland province of southern Sweden, where farmers bred versatile hunting hounds for generations. It was refined into a distinct breed in the early 20th century, largely through the efforts of Baron von Essen, with the Swedish Kennel Club recognizing it in 1921. It is recognized by the FCI and remains a rare hound even within Sweden.
Temperament
Smalandsstovare are calm, gentle, and affectionate in the home, more easygoing than many active scenthounds. In the field they are keen, driven, and hardy, trailing hare and fox with a strong voice and good stamina. Loyal to their families, they need regular exercise and scenting outlets and respond well to patient, positive training.
Questions to ask a Smalandsstovare breeder
- Are the parents worked as hunting hounds?
- Have the parents been screened for hip dysplasia?
- What is being done to maintain health in a small, rare gene pool?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Hip screening of breeding stock helps reduce orthopedic issues in active hounds.
Ear infections. Drop ears benefit from routine cleaning, especially after field work.
Limited gene pool. As a rare breed, choosing breeders who track diversity and health carefully is important.
