About the Smooth Fox Terrier

The Smooth Fox Terrier is a lively, hard-bitten English earth-dog originally bred to bolt foxes from their dens during the hunt. Sharing ancestry with the Wire Fox Terrier, it wears a short, dense, predominantly white coat that made it easy for huntsmen to distinguish from quarry. Bold, tireless, and endlessly curious, it packs enormous personality into a small, athletic frame. Modern Smooth Fox Terriers are spirited companions and successful show and performance dogs, but they retain the intense prey drive, digging instinct, and self-assured independence of a working terrier. They reward owners who provide firm, consistent training and plenty of physical and mental stimulation.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Bold, spirited, and full of personality
  • Low-maintenance short coat
  • Athletic and excels at dog sports and vermin control

Things to consider

  • Very high prey drive; unsafe with small pets
  • Prone to barking, digging, and chasing
  • Independent streak requires consistent, patient training

History

The Smooth Fox Terrier was developed in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England from black-and-tan terriers, with input from smooth-coated breeds to fix its clean white coat. It was among the earliest breeds recognized by the Kennel Club and the AKC, once shown together with the Wire before the two were separated. The breed was a fixture of fox-hunting kennels and later a popular household and show companion.

Temperament

Confident, energetic, and mischievous, the Smooth Fox Terrier is affectionate with its family and thrives on activity and attention. It is fearless and can be scrappy with strange dogs, and its high prey drive makes it unsafe with small pets. Intelligent but independent, it needs engaging, patient training to counter a stubborn, easily bored streak.
