About the South Russian Shepherd Dog
The South Russian Shepherd Dog, or Ovcharka, is a large, imposing flock-guardian cloaked in a long, coarse, weatherproof coat that hangs over its face and gives it a shaggy, almost sheep-like silhouette. Bred on the steppes of southern Russia and Ukraine to guard huge flocks against wolves and thieves, it is fearless, fiercely territorial, and profoundly devoted to its own people and stock. This is a powerful, dominant working breed with strong protective instincts and deep suspicion of strangers, demanding an experienced owner, early socialization, and firm leadership. It is not a casual pet but a serious guardian for those equipped to manage its size, drive, and independence.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The breed developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the steppe regions of southern Russia and Ukraine, likely from Asian herding dogs crossed with local sighthound and mastiff types to guard the vast merino sheep flocks introduced to the area. Numbers fell drastically during the twentieth century's wars but the breed was rebuilt from surviving stock. It is recognized by the FCI as a sheepdog and remains uncommon outside its homeland.
Temperament
Bold, self-confident, and intensely protective, the South Russian Shepherd is loyal to family but wary and often aggressive toward strangers and strange dogs. It is independent and strong-willed, making obedience a project rather than a given. It requires an assertive, knowledgeable handler, extensive socialization, secure containment, and space; it is unsuitable for novice owners.
