About the Spanish Greyhound

The Spanish Greyhound, or Galgo Español, is an ancient sighthound built for coursing hare across the open plains of Spain. Slighter and more finely drawn than the English Greyhound, with a longer body and deep chest, it combines explosive speed with remarkable endurance over rough terrain. Off the field it is famously gentle, quiet, and undemanding, content to spend much of the day sleeping and reserving its energy for short bursts of intense running. Galgos are calm, sensitive, and affectionate house companions, though their overwhelming prey drive and turn of speed mean secure fencing and careful management around small animals are essential.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Galgo descends from ancient sighthounds present in the Iberian Peninsula for millennia, refined over centuries of use in hare coursing by Spanish nobility and rural hunters. Its name derives from the Gauls or from ancient Celtic hounds, and it likely influenced the development of other European greyhound types. The breed is recognized by the FCI and has attracted international rescue efforts due to the plight of many hunting galgos in Spain.

Temperament

Gentle, reserved, and quiet, the Galgo is a calm and affectionate companion indoors that bonds closely with its family. It can be shy with strangers and typically gets along with other sighthounds. Its intense prey drive and speed require secure areas for exercise and caution around cats and small pets.

Health considerations to discuss

Musculoskeletal injuries. High-speed running can cause strains and toe injuries.

Cold sensitivity. Lean body and thin coat require protection in cold weather.
