About the Stabyhoun
The Stabyhoun is a rare, versatile farm dog from the Friesland region of the Netherlands, prized for its calm, gentle disposition and all-around utility. Traditionally it served as a pointing and retrieving gundog, mole and vermin catcher, watchdog, and family companion, all in one moderate-sized package. Its long, sleek coat, most often black-and-white, and its patient, friendly temperament make it a superb household dog, while its hunting heritage gives it a keen nose and a love of water. Intelligent but somewhat soft and sensitive, the Stabyhoun responds to gentle, consistent training and thrives on close involvement in family life.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Stabyhoun originated in the Frisian forests of the Netherlands, where it was a valued dual-purpose farm and hunting dog for at least a couple of centuries. It shares regional history with the wirehaired Wetterhoun and was long crossed with it before the breeds were separated and standardized in the twentieth century. It remains one of the world's rarer breeds, carefully managed by Dutch breed clubs to protect its limited gene pool.
Temperament
Gentle, patient, and devoted, the Stabyhoun is calm indoors and friendly with children and other animals, making it an easy family companion. It is intelligent and willing but sensitive, requiring positive, consistent handling rather than harsh methods. It bonds closely and enjoys activity and hunting-style work, but is generally quieter and easier-going than many gundogs.
