About the Styrian Coarse-Haired Hound
The Styrian Coarse-Haired Hound is a hardy Austrian mountain scenthound bred to track wounded game and hunt in the harsh, high terrain of the Alps. Developed by crossing a Hanoverian Scenthound with an Istrian hound, it was selected for toughness, a weather-resistant coarse coat, and the resilience needed to work at altitude in rough conditions. Fawn to red-brindle in color with a rugged, no-nonsense appearance, it is a persistent, focused tracker with an excellent nose and great stamina. Serious and independent at work yet steady and affectionate at home, it is best suited to hunters and active owners who can channel its scenting drive.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The breed was created in the late nineteenth century by Austrian industrialist Carl Peintinger, who crossed a Hanoverian Scenthound bitch with an Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound to produce a robust mountain tracker. Originally called Peintinger's Bracke, it was standardized for use in the Styrian Alps. It is recognized by the FCI as an Austrian scenthound and remains a specialist working breed.
