About the Sussex Spaniel
The Sussex Spaniel is a low-set, heavily built English gundog known for its rich golden-liver coat, rolling gait, and characteristically somber yet endearing expression. Bred in the county of Sussex to work dense undergrowth on foot, it moves more slowly and deliberately than other spaniels and is unusual for giving tongue while working game. Calm, affectionate, and steady, it makes a mellow and devoted family companion with a stubborn, comical streak. One of the rarest of the spaniel breeds, it has survived several brushes with extinction and today is valued as much for its gentle temperament as for its heritage as a plodding, thorough flushing dog.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Sussex Spaniel was developed in the eighteenth century, notably at Rosehill Park in Sussex, to suit foot hunters working thick cover in the region. It was one of the original breeds recognized by the AKC in 1884 but nearly died out during and after the World Wars, rebuilt from a handful of survivors in Britain. It remains one of the rarest spaniels, carefully maintained by dedicated breeders.

It can be stubborn and possesses an independent, sometimes vocal streak, but is generally even-tempered and affectionate. It has moderate exercise needs and appreciates being close to its people.
