About the Swedish Vallhund
The Swedish Vallhund is a small, powerful herding spitz sometimes called the Viking dog for its ancient association with Scandinavian farms and, by tradition, Norse seafarers. Long and low with a wedge-shaped head, erect ears, and a coat marked by a distinctive sable pattern, it can be born with tails of varying length. Energetic, confident, and clever, it drove cattle and controlled vermin on Swedish farms and today excels at herding, agility, obedience, and tricks. Friendly and affectionate with a big personality, it is a vocal, watchful companion that needs regular exercise, training, and mental challenge to channel its considerable drive.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Swedish Vallhund is an old native cattle-herding breed from Västergötland, Sweden, with a history that likely stretches back over a thousand years and possible shared ancestry with the Welsh Corgi. The breed nearly vanished by the 1940s before being revived through the efforts of Swedish enthusiasts. It is recognized by the FCI, the Kennel Club, and the AKC in the Herding group.
Temperament
Alert, energetic, and affectionate, the Swedish Vallhund is a confident, sociable dog that bonds strongly with its family and is good with children. Its herding heritage makes it watchful and quite vocal, and it retains a tendency to nip at heels without training. Intelligent and eager, it thrives on activity, dog sports, and interactive work.
