About the Swiss Hound
The Swiss Hound, or Schweizer Laufhund, is an elegant, medium-sized scenthound bred to hunt hare and other game across Switzerland's varied landscapes. Long-eared and finely built with a keen nose and a musical voice, it works methodically on a trail and is prized for accuracy and endurance rather than speed. The breed exists in four traditional regional varieties, differing mainly in color, including the Bernese, Jura, Lucerne, and Schwyz types. Friendly and gentle by nature, it makes an amiable companion for active homes, but its powerful hunting drive, wanderlust, and vocal baying mean it needs secure fencing, leash control, and plentiful exercise.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
Swiss scenthounds are ancient, with regional pack hounds documented across Switzerland for centuries and depicted in art dating to the Roman era. The modern Swiss Hound was standardized with its four regional color varieties, all sharing a common breed standard. It is recognized by the FCI and remains predominantly a hunting dog in its homeland.
Temperament
Gentle, friendly, and passionate about scent, the Swiss Hound is affectionate with its family and generally good with other dogs, reflecting its pack heritage. Once on a trail it becomes single-minded, and its strong nose makes off-lead recall unreliable. It gives voice readily and needs an active owner able to provide long walks or tracking work.
