About the Taiwan Dog

The Taiwan Dog is an ancient landrace originally kept by the indigenous peoples of Taiwan as a hunting and guarding companion in the island's mountainous forests. Medium-sized, agile, and lean, it has a short coat, prick ears, an almond eye, and a triangular head, reflecting its primitive hunting-dog heritage. Highly alert, loyal, and deeply bonded to its owner, it is intelligent and quick to learn but naturally wary of strangers and other dogs. Sure-footed and hardy, it makes a devoted, protective companion for experienced owners who can provide early socialization, consistent training, and the exercise and mental engagement its energetic, sensitive nature requires.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Taiwan Dog descends from semi-wild hunting dogs kept by Taiwan's aboriginal tribes for thousands of years, and DNA studies link it to ancient Asian dog populations. Crossbreeding during periods of colonization reduced purebred numbers, prompting preservation efforts in the twentieth century. The breed is recognized by the FCI and is a source of national pride in Taiwan.
