About the Tibetan Spaniel
The Tibetan Spaniel is a small, assertive companion dog bred for centuries in the monasteries of Tibet, where it served as a watchful lookout and cherished lap warmer for Buddhist monks. Despite its name it is not a true spaniel but a distinctive little breed with a domed head, expressive eyes, a silky mane, and a plumed tail carried over the back. Intelligent, independent, and affectionate, it bonds deeply with its family while retaining an aloofness with strangers and a keen watchdog's eye. Alert and self-possessed rather than clingy, it makes a charming, adaptable companion that combines devotion with a proud, catlike independence.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Tibetan Spaniel was developed in Tibetan monasteries, where small companion dogs kept vigil on monastery walls and were valued as prayer companions and gifts of goodwill. The breed reached Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and was later recognized by the Kennel Club and the AKC in the Non-Sporting group. It shares ancient roots with other Tibetan breeds and Asian companion dogs.
Temperament
Confident, affectionate, and intelligent, the Tibetan Spaniel is devoted to its family yet independent and somewhat aloof with strangers, making it an alert watchdog. It is playful and adaptable, generally good with children and other pets, but can be willful and benefits from patient, positive training. It enjoys perching in high spots to survey its surroundings.
