About the Tornjak
The Tornjak is a large, ancient livestock guardian native to the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, bred to protect flocks of sheep from wolves and bears. Powerfully built and well proportioned, it carries a long, dense double coat that shields it from harsh mountain weather and a calm, dignified bearing that reflects its guarding heritage. Loyal, steady, and deeply devoted to its family and stock, it is naturally suspicious of intruders yet not needlessly aggressive, showing measured judgment typical of a good flock guardian. It requires space, early socialization, and an experienced owner who understands the independent mindset of a working guardian breed.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Tornjak has guarded flocks in the Dinaric mountains for centuries, with references to similar dogs in the region dating back to the medieval period. It is recognized by the FCI as a sheepdog and livestock guardian of the western Balkans.
Temperament
Calm, confident, and devoted, the Tornjak is loyal and gentle with its family while remaining vigilant and protective toward strangers and threats to its flock. It is independent and thinks for itself, as befits a guardian, so it needs early socialization and respectful, consistent guidance rather than rote obedience. Steady-natured and not overly aggressive, it is a dependable, self-reliant working dog.
