About the Toy Fox Terrier

The Toy Fox Terrier is a small, elegant American breed that combines the spirited character of a terrier with the affectionate charm of a toy companion. Bred down from the Smooth Fox Terrier with additions of toy breeds, it is finely built, athletic, and intelligent, wearing a short, glossy coat usually marked in white with black and tan. Bold, alert, and highly trainable, it retains genuine ratting instinct and a fearless attitude in a diminutive frame. Devoted and lively, it excels at obedience, agility, and trick work while making a loving lap companion, offering the personality of a big terrier in a portable, apartment-friendly package.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

  • Highly intelligent and trainable for a toy breed
  • Affectionate, portable, and apartment-friendly
  • Low-maintenance coat and lively personality

  • Fragile size requires careful handling around small children

  • Sensitive to cold; may need a coat in winter

History

The Toy Fox Terrier was developed in the United States in the early twentieth century by crossing small Smooth Fox Terriers with toy breeds such as the Chihuahua and Manchester Terrier to reduce size while keeping terrier gameness. It was long recognized by the United Kennel Club before being admitted to the AKC Toy group in 2003. It served as a farm ratter and circus performer before becoming a popular companion.

Temperament

Intelligent, spirited, and affectionate, the Toy Fox Terrier bonds closely with its owner and is eager to please, making it one of the more trainable toy breeds. It is bold and alert, with a terrier's confidence and prey drive, and can be a lively watchdog. Playful and devoted, it enjoys activity and games but is also content to share a lap.
