About the Toy Manchester Terrier
The Toy Manchester Terrier is a sleek, black-and-tan companion bred down in size from the Standard Manchester Terrier, sharing its rat-hunting ancestry but weighing under 12 pounds. Elegant and whip-smart, it carries naturally erect "candle-flame" ears, a tight glossy coat, and a lively, terrier-alert disposition. These dogs bond intensely with their people, thrive in apartments, and combine toy-breed portability with genuine ratting instinct and athleticism. They are keen watchdogs, quick to learn, and require far less grooming than most companion toys, though their sensitivity and prey drive call for patient, positive handling.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Manchester Terrier descends from crosses of the old Black and Tan Terrier with Whippets in 19th-century England, refined for rat-killing and rabbit coursing around Manchester. Fanciers bred a smaller "toy" variety kept as ladies' companions, and for decades ear-cropping fashions nearly ruined the type. The AKC recognizes Toy and Standard varieties under one breed, distinguished chiefly by size and by the Toy's required naturally erect ears.
Temperament
Spirited, devoted, and observant, the Toy Manchester attaches closely to its family and can be reserved with strangers. It retains true terrier keenness, chasing small moving things and sounding off at unfamiliar noises. Bright and eager, it responds well to gentle, reward-based training but resents harsh correction.
Questions to ask a Toy Manchester Terrier breeder
- Are the sire and dam naturally erect-eared and free of ear-set faults?
- Have the parents been screened for von Willebrand disease and cardiac issues?
- What is the temperament of the dam around strangers and children?
- Do you register these as Toy variety with documented pedigrees?
Health considerations to discuss
Von Willebrand disease. An inherited bleeding disorder; ask for DNA test results in the line.
Patellar luxation. Common in toy breeds; slipping kneecaps may need orthopedic evaluation.
Cardiomyopathy. Periodic cardiac checks help catch heart muscle disease early.
Cold sensitivity. The thin coat offers little insulation; provide sweaters in winter.
