About the Transylvanian Hound

The Transylvanian Hound, or Erdelyi Kopo, is an ancient Hungarian scenthound bred to trail game across the harsh terrain and climate of the Carpathian Basin. Sturdy, black-and-tan, and moderately built, it is prized for its resonant voice, endurance, and independent tracking of boar, deer, and fox. Historically kept by nobility and nearly lost after both World Wars, the breed survives today as a determined working hound and increasingly a loyal family dog. It is affectionate and calm at home yet needs abundant exercise, firm guidance, and space to express its powerful nose and stamina.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Outstanding endurance and cold-hardy constitution
  • Superb scenting ability and tracking drive
  • Calm and affectionate with family indoors

  • Loud, far-carrying bay that suits rural homes

  • Independent nature demands patient training
  • Strong prey drive requires secure fencing

History

Developed in medieval Hungary, the Transylvanian Hound accompanied Magyar hunters and nobility across mountains and lowlands, with historically recognized short-legged and long-legged forms suited to different quarry. Habitat loss, changing hunting laws, and two world wars pushed the breed to the brink; dedicated Hungarian fanciers revived it from a small remnant in the 1960s. The FCI recognizes the surviving long-legged type.

Temperament

Balanced, courageous, and even-tempered, the Transylvanian Hound is devoted and gentle with its family while retaining strong hunting drive outdoors. It is independent on the trail but biddable at home with consistent leadership. Well socialized, it is good-natured with children and tolerant of other dogs.

Questions to ask a Transylvanian Hound breeder

  • Is the litter registered through a recognized Hungarian or FCI club?
  • Have hips and eyes been evaluated in the parents?
  • How is the line's temperament with families versus pure working homes?
  • What working or field aptitude do the parents demonstrate?

Health considerations to discuss

Hip dysplasia. Ask for hip scores on both parents given the large frame.

Limited gene pool. The narrow post-revival population makes pedigree diversity worth checking.

Ear infections. Drop ears benefit from routine cleaning after outdoor work.

Exercise-related strain. Young dogs need controlled activity while joints mature.
