About the Treeing Walker Coonhound

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is a fast, hot-nosed American scenthound bred from Walker Foxhound stock to trail and tree raccoons with a distinctive bawling and chopping voice. Tall, lean, and athletic, it is celebrated among houndsmen as "the people's choice" for its speed, endurance, and treeing accuracy. Away from the hunt it is a smart, affectionate, and sociable companion that bonds warmly with its family. Its tricolor coat is easy to maintain, but its stamina, powerful nose, and famously loud voice mean it thrives with active owners and secure, spacious surroundings.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Exceptional speed, endurance, and treeing ability
  • Friendly and sociable with people and other dogs
  • Short, weatherproof coat is easy to care for
  • Affectionate and adaptable family companion when exercised

Things to consider

  • Very loud, far-carrying voice
  • Overpowering nose leads to wandering off scent
  • High exercise needs; not an apartment dog
  • Unreliable off-leash recall in open areas

History

The breed descends from the Walker Foxhound, itself rooted in English Foxhounds and the legendary "Tennessee Lead" dog imported in the 1800s. Coon hunters selected for treeing ability, producing a distinct strain recognized by the UKC in 1945 and by the AKC in 2012. It remains one of the most popular competition coonhounds in the United States.

Temperament

Energetic, confident, and friendly, the Treeing Walker is devoted to its family and generally sociable with people and other hounds. On a scent it becomes single-minded and hard to recall. Smart and trainable with motivation, it is happiest with a job and plenty of exercise.

Health considerations to discuss

Ear infections. Long drop ears require frequent cleaning and drying.

Eye conditions. Ask about ophthalmologic clearances in the line.

Bloat. Deep-chested hounds carry some gastric torsion risk; monitor feeding.
