About the West Siberian Laika
The West Siberian Laika is a robust, wolf-like Russian hunting spitz bred by taiga peoples to track and bay big game across vast northern forests. Athletic, weatherproof, and fiercely independent, it hunts moose, boar, bear, and fur game with a strong voice and tireless drive. Deeply loyal to its owner yet reserved and territorial with strangers, it is a primitive breed with intense energy and a powerful prey instinct. The West Siberian Laika suits experienced, active owners in cold climates who can provide serious exercise, secure space, and a purposeful working life.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

It remains one of Russia's premier hunting breeds. The UKC recognizes the West Siberian Laika, which is still bred primarily for utility.

It is a driven, self-directed hunter with a strong prey instinct and abundant energy. Intelligent but strong-willed, it needs an experienced owner and thorough socialization.
