About the Wetterhoun
The Wetterhoun, or Frisian Water Dog, is a powerful, curly-coated Dutch gundog bred in the province of Friesland to hunt otter and waterfowl and to guard the farmstead. Solidly built with a distinctive oily, tight-curled coat and a spiral tail, it is a tough, self-reliant worker equally at home in water and on land. Reserved and protective by nature, the Wetterhoun is deeply loyal to its family yet wary of strangers, making it a natural watchdog. This rare, versatile breed needs experienced owners who can meet its exercise, working, and firm-training requirements.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Wetterhoun has hunted and guarded on Frisian farms for centuries, developed to catch otters and vermin and to retrieve from the region's waterways. Nearly lost during World War II, it was preserved by dedicated Dutch breeders and recognized by the FCI. It remains uncommon even in the Netherlands and rare elsewhere.
Temperament
Steady, courageous, and independent, the Wetterhoun is loyal and affectionate with its family but reserved and vigilant toward strangers. It has strong guarding and hunting instincts and a stubborn, self-directed streak. Intelligent but headstrong, it needs early socialization and patient, consistent leadership.
Questions to ask a Wetterhoun breeder

Hip dysplasia. Screen breeding stock given the sturdy build.
Limited gene pool. The rare breed's small population warrants careful pedigree review.
Ear infections. Drop ears and water work call for routine ear care.
