About the Wirehaired Vizsla

The Wirehaired Vizsla is a rugged Hungarian pointing breed developed from the smooth Vizsla to withstand harsh weather and dense cover while retaining the Vizsla's affectionate nature and versatile gundog skill. Its dense, wiry golden-rust coat, pronounced eyebrows, and beard set it apart, providing protection in cold water and thorny terrain. A tireless, close-working pointer and retriever, it is also a devoted, sensitive companion that craves human closeness. Energetic and highly trainable, the Wirehaired Vizsla suits active owners who can meet its considerable exercise needs and appreciate its "velcro" attachment to family.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

Created in 1930s Hungary by crossing Vizslas with German Wirehaired Pointers and other breeds, the Wirehaired Vizsla was bred to work in colder conditions and rougher cover than the smooth Vizsla could comfortably handle. It was recognized as a distinct breed by the FCI and later by the AKC in 2014. It remains a dedicated hunting and companion breed.

Temperament

Affectionate, gentle, and lively, the Wirehaired Vizsla bonds intensely with its family and dislikes being alone. It is a keen, biddable gundog with a calm, sensitive disposition and strong desire to please. Intelligent and energetic, it needs plenty of exercise and gentle, consistent training.
