About the Working Kelpie
The Working Kelpie is an Australian herding dog bred purely for stock work, prized on sheep and cattle stations for its stamina, initiative, and remarkable ability to "back" across the top of packed flocks. Distinct from the show-bred Australian Kelpie, it varies in size and color and is selected strictly for herding performance rather than appearance. Intensely energetic, intelligent, and biddable, it can work all day in harsh heat and rough country. The Working Kelpie is a demanding partner that needs a genuine job, abundant exercise, and mental challenge, making it best suited to farms or serious dog-sport homes.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Kelpie was developed in late-19th-century Australia from imported Scottish collie-type dogs, with the foundation bitch "Kelpie" lending the breed its name. Stockmen bred selectively for tireless, independent herding on vast, arid stations, producing a working strain maintained by the Working Kelpie Council apart from the show-standard Australian Kelpie. It remains a cornerstone of Australian pastoral work.
Temperament
Energetic, intelligent, and intensely driven, the Working Kelpie lives to work stock and thrives on purpose and activity. It is loyal and devoted to its handler, quick-thinking, and highly trainable, with strong independence in the field. Without adequate work it can become restless and develop unwanted habits.
